Baylor’s Brittney Griner is up for Sports Illustrated’s prestigious 2012-2013 SI College Athlete of the Year award, the magazine announced Wednesday.

The award is down to 10 finalists, and a men’s and women’s winner will be featured in the May 27 issue of SI, which hits stands May 22. Beginning May 8, fans can vote on SI’s website to help determine winners.

Griner is up against four women for the honor: Liz Brenner (Oregon volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field), Kimberlyn Duncan (LSU track and field), Loren Shealy (North Carolina field hockey) and Taylor Thornton (Northwestern lacrosse).

Men’s finalists are Trey Burke (Michigan basketball), Kyle Dake (Cornell wrestling), Khaled Holmes (USC football), Drew LeBlanc (St. Cloud State hockey) and Tyler Thornton (Duke basketball).

Meanwhile, the stage is set for Griner’s WNBA debut. Her Phoenix Mercury open the season May 27 against the visiting Chicago Sky, who drafted Elena Delle Donne with last month’s No. 2 overall pick. Griner was No. 1.

The game is set for a 5 p.m. tip on ESPN2. It’s the second part of a doubleheader that begins with Skylar Diggins’ Tulsa Shock hosting the Washington Mystics at 3 p.m.
